Pablo Picasso and Gabrielle Chanel collaborated professionally on two occasions, both with Jean Cocteau: on *Antigone* (1922) and on Sergei Diaghilev’s Russian ballet *Le Train Bleu* (1924). They met around the spring of 1917, most likely through Cocteau himself or Misia Sert. The designer formed a long and lasting friendship with both of them, which would introduce her to the Spanish painter’s circle. From then on, Chanel would frequently socialize with the Picassos, coinciding with the artist’s active participation in the Russian ballets. The designer became deeply connected to the artistic and intellectual world of Paris at the time, to the point of stating: “It is the artists who have taught me rigor.” “The Chanel Style and Cubism” explores the influence of this movement on Chanel’s creations, beginning with her earliest and most innovative designs: the geometric formal language, the limited color palette, and the Cubist poetics of collage are reflected in suits with straight, angular lines, in her preference for white, black, and beige, and in the use of simple fabrics with austere textures. Olga Picasso, the second chapter, is dedicated to the numerous beautiful portraits Picasso painted of his first wife, the Russian dancer Olga Khokhlova, a devoted Chanel client; alongside them are several dresses from this early period of the French designer, of which only a few examples survive. Antigone, a modern adaptation of Sophocles’ play by Cocteau, premiered in Paris in 1922, with sets and masks by Picasso and costumes by Chanel, who come together again in this chapter to showcase their shared inspiration in classical Greece. Le Train Bleu is the title of the fourth section and of the ballet produced by Diaghilev in 1924, with a libretto by Cocteau, inspired by sports and swimwear; Two Women Running on the Beach (The Race)A small gouache that Diaghilev discovered in Picasso’s studio became the design for the play’s curtain, and the painter also accepted the commission to illustrate the program, while Chanel, an enthusiastic sportswoman, created costumes for the dancers inspired by sportswear she had designed for herself and her clients.
