Antonius Sanderus (Antoon Sanders) (1586-1664)
Hagæ Comitum: apud Christianum Van Lom, 1726-1727.
A history of Brabant abbeys and monasteries.
Note that the plates of the monasteries and abbies are cut out and therefore failing! However all text pages are complete.
3 folio volumes (480x280 mm). The title is red and black on the front page, with a graceful oval vignette engraved by D. Coster. Engraved frontispiece with a full-page portrait of the author. Finely engraved headpieces and capitals. Text in two columns. Worn boards, browning on the page edges, stamps on the first page. Contemporary brown full calf binding, marbled endpapers, gold decorations on the boards, gold title within a tag on the spine, red-colored edges. Condition is good considering it's age, see photo's.
The Chorographia sacra Brabantiae by Antonius Sanderus is a beautiful historical work. Sanderus was a scholar of theology. The Chorographia contains descriptions and illustrations of Brabant monasteries that have since disappeared or undergone thorough changes. The first part of the Chorographia appeared in 1659 from the Brussels printer Philip Vleugaert and contained 27 illustrated descriptions. The second part appeared in 1663. In the eighteenth century, the Chorographia was already extremely rare; therefore, Christiaan van Lom printed a completely new edition in 1726.
