De Wii[g] (/wiː/ WEE) is a videogameconsole for home use, developed and marketed by Nintendo. It was released on November 19, 2006 in North America and in December 2006 in most other regions of the world. It is Nintendo's fifth major home gaming console, after the GameCube, and belongs to the seventh generation of consoles, together with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.
Nintendo-president Satoru Iwata aimed to appeal to a broader audience through innovative gameplay, rather than competing with Microsoft and Sony on raw processing power. Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda led development, which initially carried the codename Revolution. The Wii emphasized new forms of interaction, primarily via the wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which had motion detection, could recognize gestures and function as a pointing device. The Wii was Nintendo's first console with native internet connectivity, enabling online gaming and digital distribution via the Wii Shop Channel. It also supported wireless connectivity with the portable Nintendo DS console for certain games. The first models were backward compatible with GameCube games and accessories. Nintendo later released cheaper versions: the RVL-101, without GameCube compatibility, and the Wii Mini, which lacked features such as online connectivity and SD card storage.
Because Nintendo de-emphasized raw power, the Wii and its games were cheaper to manufacture than those of the competition. The console launched extremely popular and in some markets hard to obtain. Wii Sports, a game bundled with the console, became the main app of the Wii, while new installments in the Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Pokémon and Metroid series further increased its popularity. Within a year the Wii became the best-selling seventh-generation console and a social phenomenon in many countries. Total Wii sales reached more than 101 million units, making it Nintendo's best-selling home console until it was surpassed in 2021 by the Nintendo Switch. [h] In 2025 it is the seventh best-selling console of all time.
The Wii repositioned Nintendo as a major player in the videogame console market. The popularity of motion-control games led Microsoft and Sony to develop Kinect and PlayStation Move. The Wii achieved Nintendo's goal of appealing to a broader audience on home gaming consoles, but at the same time alienated hardcore gamers. In an effort to win back this important audience, Nintendo released in 2012 their next home console, the Wii U, which, however, did not achieve success. The Wii was discontinued in October 2013, although the Wii Mini remained in production for a few more years and some online services continued until 2019.
