Sunlight. There is something quietly captivating about the ancient alchemy of the cyanotype. Light itself becomes the artist, transforming paper into deep Prussian blue while preserving every delicate detail with remarkable richness and radiance. Created from one of Michael Joseph's original photographic negatives, Buddha in Bloom is a unique collaboration across generations. His striking photograph has been lovingly reimagined through one of photography's earliest printing processes, allowing a familiar image to bloom into something altogether more meditative, more mysterious and more magical. Surrounding the seated figure, slender stems, seed heads and wildflowers have left their own spectral signatures directly upon the sensitised paper. These are not printed additions but genuine botanical photograms - plants placed by hand beneath the summer sun, their silhouettes forever fused with the photograph itself. Their playful presence invites wonderfully wandering imaginations: perhaps they are shimmering bubbles rising through tranquil water; perhaps they're buoyant balloons drifting skyward; perhaps they are wisps of dreamlike cloud, softly circling a figure suspended somewhere between earth and eternity. The sumptuous spectrum of sapphire and cobalt blues lends the work a soothing serenity, while the beautifully balanced composition draws the eye towards a face that seems to emerge gently from shadow into light. It is a picture that rewards repeated viewing, revealing fresh nuances with every glance. The softly rippled, hand-torn edges remain intentionally visible within the mount as a celebration of the handmade process—honest, organic and entirely authentic. Should a future owner prefer a more traditional presentation, the artwork could easily be re-mounted with a slightly larger window mount that conceals these charming crinkles, creating an altogether cleaner, more formal finish. I chose instead to leave them exposed as a reminder that this is not a machine-made print, but a singular object shaped by sunlight, water, paper and hand. Every brushstroke of sensitiser, every subtle shift of tone, every tiny imperfection contributes to the individuality of the work. No edition exists. No duplicate can ever be produced. A peaceful piece that blends photography, printmaking and the poetry of nature, Buddha in Bloom is an invitation to pause, ponder and simply breathe.
