This inscription captures a poignant and cinematic moment from World War II, written by a young Greek airman named "Potis" (the traditional, affectionate Greek diminutive for Panagiotis).Following the Axis occupation of Greece, Panagiotis was among the brave service members who escaped to the Middle East to continue the fight for freedom. Serving as an airman in the Royal Hellenic Air Force, his squadron was stationed alongside the British RAF at a desert airfield near Cairo. In his note, he phonetically refers to his station as "Tayram Arabi"—the Greek transliteration of the Arabic words for "Arab Aviation."Because the exiled Greek airmen were trained under British command, their technical manuals and academic readings were strictly in English. Panagiotis, evidently a highly educated intellectual whose university studies back home were violently disrupted by the war, carried with him a rare English edition of Jakob von Uexküll’s seminal scientific work, "Theoretical Biology" (1926).On July, 1943, amidst the dust, danger, and geopolitical chaos of the North African campaign, Panagiotis found a fleeting moment of pure human warmth. He fell in love with a local woman. Wanting to leave her a lasting token of his affection, he opened his dense biology textbook and used the flyleaf as a canvas for a secret, cross-cultural love letter.Right under his military station and the date, he penned a single, deeply romantic word in her own Egyptian Arabic dialect, using the Greek alphabet: "- Ahebaick -" ("I love you"). With a flourish of his pen, he signed it Potis, leaving behind a breathtaking artifact that seamlessly blends global scientific history, modern military lore, and a beautiful wartime romance that bloomed in the heart of Egypt.
An excellent opportunity to acquire a scarce first edition of one of the foundational works of twentieth century theoretical biology, enhanced by a remarkable wartime provenance.
