Homer / Virgil - The Odyssey / The Georgics - 1969-1975

Two important illustrated classics from Ancient Greek and Rome: 1. "The Odyssey" by Homer and illustrated by E.V. Rieu - Folio Society, Lodon - 1975 UK edition - 20cmx15cm - condition: very good, original binding, all lithographs by Rieu present The Odyssey (/ˈɒdɪsi/;[1] Ancient Greek: Ὀδύσσεια, romanized: Odýsseia [odýsseːa])[2] is one of two major epics of ancient Greek literature attributed to Homer. It is one of the oldest surviving works of literature and remains popular with modern audiences. Like the Iliad, the Odyssey is divided into 24 books. It follows the heroic king of Ithaca, Odysseus, also known by the Latin variant Ulysses, and his homecoming journey after the ten-year-long Trojan War. His journey from Troy to Ithaca lasts an additional ten years, during which time he encounters many perils and all of his crewmates are killed. In Odysseus's long absence, he is presumed dead, leaving his wife Penelope and son Telemachus to contend with a group of unruly suitors competing for Penelope's hand in marriage. 2 "The Georgics" by Publius Vergilius Maro and with soft-ground etchings by Nigel Lambourne - Folio Socieyt, 1969 first thus UK edition - 20cmx15cm - condition: good, one stain to cover, all etchings present. The Georgics (/ˈdʒɔːrdʒɪks/ JOR-jiks; Latin: Georgica [ɡeˈoːrɡɪka]) is a poem by Latin poet Virgil, likely published in 29 BCE.[1] As the name suggests (from the Greek word γεωργικά, geōrgiká, i.e. "agricultural [things]"),[2] the subject of the poem is agriculture; but far from being an example of peaceful rural poetry, it is a work characterized by tensions in both theme and purpose. The Georgics is considered Virgil's second major work, following his Eclogues and preceding the Aeneid. The poem draws on a variety of prior sources and has influenced many later authors from antiquity to the present
