Rare surviving episodes of Joe Palooka on the cover of the Philadelphia Inquirer comics section between February and March 1943. This bundle contains 15 large size newspaper pages (39x54cm) featuring Joe Palooka. Each page has Walt Disney comics printed on the verso side: Mickey Mouse and Joe Carioca. Joe Palooka, an American comic strip about a heavyweight boxing champion, was originally created by cartoonist Ham Fisher. The strip debuted on April 19, 1930. During World War II, the popular comic strip character enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 4, 1940, a full year before Pearl Harbor. Strips followed him heading out on troopships, going overseas, facing enemy lines and fighting nazi's. Real soldiers overseas adopted Joe as an unofficial mascot, and the comic became essential reading for morale in military camps. Joe's name appears in several episodes of the long-running television show M*A*S*H, most notably in the 10th-season episode "Heroes", where fictional prize fighter "Gentleman Joe" Cavanaugh visits the outfit and Margaret remarks, "Is that what it takes to get a steak dinner around here, a visit from some Joe Palooka?" The pages are in very good condition, although wrinkles, tears, flaking and missing pieces may occur. The lots in this auction can be shipped combined.
