Plaque en bronze de style Bénin – Trois personnages / guerriers – Peuple Edo

Belle plaque en relief en alliage cuivreux, réalisée dans le style des célèbres plaques royales du Royaume du Bénin, dans l'actuel Nigeria.

La plaque présente trois personnages en haut-relief, représentés de face et richement parés. La figure centrale, de plus grande importance, est encadrée par deux personnages latéraux de type guerriers ou dignitaires. Les figures portent de hautes coiffes cérémonielles, des colliers et parures caractéristiques de l'iconographie royale Edo, ainsi que différents attributs et armes.

Le fond est animé de motifs géométriques et végétaux en faible relief. L'ensemble présente une patine ancienne à dominante brun-rouge et vert-de-gris, donnant à la pièce un aspect particulièrement décoratif et expressif.

Cette œuvre est à considérer comme une reproduction / interprétation du XXe siècle inspirée des plaques en bronze du Royaume du Bénin, et non comme une plaque royale originale des XVIe-XVIIe siècles.

Les plaques historiques du Bénin étaient produites selon la technique de la cire perdue et servaient notamment à décorer les piliers du palais royal de l'Oba à Benin City. Elles constituent aujourd'hui l'un des ensembles les plus importants de l'art royal Edo.

La plaque est présentée fixée sur une planche de bois, avec deux éléments d'accrochage et une petite chaînette permettant son installation murale. Le support en bois et le système d'accrochage sont postérieurs à la réalisation de la plaque.

Benin-Style Bronze Plaque – Three Figures / Warriors – Edo People

Beautiful relief plaque in copper alloy, made in the style of the famous royal plaques of the Kingdom of Benin, in present-day Nigeria.

The plaque depicts three figures in high relief, shown frontally and richly adorned. The central figure, of greater importance, is flanked by two figures resembling warriors or dignitaries. They wear tall ceremonial headdresses, necklaces and ornaments characteristic of Edo royal iconography, along with various attributes and weapons.

The background features geometric and vegetal motifs in low relief. The piece has an aged brown-red and verdigris patina, giving it a particularly decorative and expressive appearance.

This work should be considered a 20th-century reproduction or interpretation inspired by the bronze plaques of the Kingdom of Benin, rather than an original royal plaque from the 16th–17th centuries.

Historical Benin plaques were produced using the lost-wax technique and were used notably to decorate the pillars of the Oba’s royal palace in Benin City. Today, they form one of the most important collections of Edo royal art.

The plaque is mounted on a wooden board with two hanging fixtures and a small chain for wall installation. The wooden support and hanging system are later additions.
