Gabriela Antonina Bunea - Reclaimed by Nature
Memento Mori: Reclaimed by Nature is an original three-dimensional mixed-media artwork by Gabriela Bunea, exploring mortality, the passage of time and nature's continuous cycle of decay and renewal.
At the centre of the composition is a sculptural human skull emerging dramatically from a heavily textured dark surface. Green moss-like vegetation spreads organically around and across the figure, creating the impression that nature is gradually reclaiming what remains.
The skull is presented within an elaborate oval ornamental frame, giving the composition the character of an old portrait or memorial object. This traditional presentation contrasts deliberately with the unsettling central subject and the organic material appearing to grow across it.
The work draws upon the historic concept of memento mori – the artistic reminder of mortality – while introducing nature as a symbol of continuation and renewal.
Death is therefore not presented simply as an ending. The vegetation surrounding the skull suggests a continuing natural cycle in which decay becomes the foundation for new growth.
Technique and materials
The artwork was constructed entirely by hand as a three-dimensional mixed-media composition.
The central skull was individually sculpted and painted by hand. Multiple tonal layers in ivory, grey and black were applied to create an aged bone appearance, with darker shading used within the eye sockets, nasal cavity, teeth and natural-looking surface fissures.
The skull projects substantially from the background rather than sitting flat against the surface. Its open jaw further emphasises the physical depth and sculptural character of the work.
Behind the skull is a heavily textured black surface created to provide visual contrast with both the pale bone tones and the surrounding vegetation.
Green preserved/decorative moss-like material has been individually arranged around the composition and allowed to extend irregularly across the skull and background. Its deliberately organic placement contrasts with the symmetry and formality of the surrounding frame.
A muted purple background remains partially visible beneath the darker textured layers and vegetation, introducing an additional colour contrast without dominating the composition.
The artwork is completed by an elaborate baroque-inspired oval frame, finished in dark metallic tones. The ornamental scrolls and foliage surrounding the central composition reinforce the appearance of an antique portrait while framing a distinctly unconventional contemporary subject.
Because the artwork incorporates individually shaped, textured, painted and positioned elements, small variations and irregularities are intentional characteristics of its handmade construction.
Three-dimensional character
An important aspect of this artwork is its physical depth.
The skull extends prominently beyond the background surface, while the jaw, surrounding textures and vegetation create several additional levels of relief.
As a result, the appearance of the artwork changes noticeably according to the viewing position.
Seen directly from the front, it resembles a dark historical portrait. Viewed from either side, the projecting skull and layered construction become much more apparent.
Light also produces different shadows around the skull, jaw and textured elements throughout the day, emphasising the sculptural qualities of the piece.
Concept and symbolism
The composition combines several traditional symbols associated with mortality and transformation.
The skull represents mortality and the inevitable passage of time.
The vegetation introduces the opposite force: regeneration, persistence and the ability of nature to continue beyond individual existence.
The ornate frame references traditional portraiture and memorial imagery, creating the impression that the viewer is looking at a portrait from another period whose subject has gradually been reclaimed by nature.
The contrast between the carefully structured frame and the irregular growth spreading across the composition is intentional.
Rather than presenting mortality solely as something macabre, the work considers death and renewal as interconnected stages within the same natural cycle.
Originality
This is an original, one-of-a-kind artwork (1/1) created by Gabriela Bunea.
It is not a print, reproduction or mass-produced decorative piece.
The sculptural skull, textured surfaces, painted elements and placement of the vegetation were individually created and assembled by hand, making the finished composition unique.
Condition
The artwork is in excellent condition.
Cracks, irregular coloration and aged effects visible on the skull are intentional elements of the artistic finish and should not be interpreted as accidental damage.
Likewise, variations within the textured background and irregular distribution of the vegetation form part of the original composition.
The accompanying photographs show the artwork from the front, from oblique angles and in close detail so that its surface, depth and three-dimensional construction can be examined.
Presentation
Memento Mori: Reclaimed by Nature combines elements of contemporary mixed-media art, sculptural relief, gothic aesthetics, dark art and symbolic portraiture.
Its oval ornamental frame forms an integral part of the finished artwork and is included with the piece.
The combination of dark metallic tones, aged bone colouring, muted purple and organic green creates a deliberately restrained but strongly contrasting palette.
The artwork is ready for wall display.
Care
Because this is a handmade three-dimensional artwork, careful handling is recommended.
Dust should be removed gently using a soft, dry brush. Water, cleaning products and sprays should not be applied to the artwork.
Pressure should not be placed on the skull, vegetation or other raised components.
For long-term preservation, the artwork is intended for indoor display, away from excessive humidity and prolonged direct sunlight.
Shipping
The artwork will be carefully and securely packaged for transport, with particular attention given to protecting the projecting skull, jaw, ornamental frame and raised surface elements.
Protective packaging will be used to minimise movement during transit.
The buyer will receive the original artwork shown in the photographs, including its ornamental frame.
