Maska taneczna - Dan - Wybrzeże Kości Słoniowej - Dan DeangleMask
Dan Deangle Mask, Côte d’Ivoire / Liberia
Wood with dark patina, height: 25 cm.
Provenance: Old Dutch collection, acquired in the 1980s.
A finely carved Deangle mask of the Dan people, Côte d’Ivoire / Liberia, characterized by its harmonious oval face, high domed forehead, and delicately shaped lips. The eyes are pierced for vision, framed by strongly arched brows, giving the mask a serene yet powerful presence. The smooth contours and well-balanced proportions exemplify the Dan aesthetic of idealized beauty.
The perimeter of the mask is pierced with holes for attachment of fiber or raffia, once completing the ensemble during masquerade performances. The interior shows clear traces of ritual use and handling, with a deep encrusted patina from age and contact, confirming its long ritual life.
In Dan tradition, Deangle masks embody benevolent forest spirits associated with beauty, harmony, and initiation rites. They appear in ceremonies to entertain, instruct, and protect the community, often representing an ideal of feminine grace.
A compelling and authentic example of classic Dan sculpture, notable for its refined features, deep patina, and ritual history.
Condition: Good, authentic condition with surface wear, patina, and minor rim losses consistent with age and use. No structural damage.
