One is a small sake cup with a soft blue-green celadon interior (石化瓷青磁盃), and the other is a taller tea cup, or yunomi, with a grey-white glaze and carved Sekika relief pattern (石化瓷彫文湯呑). Both pieces feature Satoh’s characteristic rugged, stone-like exterior, evoking weathered rock or volcanic cliffs, contrasted with smooth, glassy glaze inside. (“Sekka” literally means stone-transformation.) Kazuhiko Satoh (born 1947 in Fujisawa, Kanagawa) is known for pursuing a highly individual hand-built style. He graduated from the Department of Crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1970 and completed the university’s graduate programme in ceramics in 1972, studying under the important ceramic artists Fujimoto Noutou and Tamura Kouichi. His graduation piece “Saibun Sekki (Decorated Stoneware)” received the Salon de Printemps Prize, and since then he has exhibited widely in solo and group shows in Japan and abroad. This set clearly reflects his interest in sculptural forms and textured surfaces that blur the line between vessel and small object of contemporary ceramic art. Each cup is signed “Satoh” impressed on the underside. Each comes with its own original wooden tomobako storage box, inscribed with the title, signature and seal, as well as a stamped cloth. A printed career leaflet is also included, making this an attractive ensemble for collectors of contemporary Japanese ceramics. Good to very good used condition with minor signs of use. The wooden box for the yunomi shows some stains, scratches and small dents. Both cloths have loose threads along the edges. Please refer to the photos for further details. Dimensions: approx. H 4.5-8.2 cm W 6.8-7.3 cm D 7-7.5 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
