An antique pair of lacquered iron abumi 鐙 (stirrups). This pair is of the typical wa-abumi 鰐鐙 (“swan-shaped”) form, finished in reddish-gold nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer) and bordered with vibrant red lacquered edges. The sides are decorated with a karakusa 唐草 (scrolling foliage) pattern that begins in nashiji and transitions into speckled raden 螺鈿 (mother-of-pearl) inlay. The tops feature an openwork splashing-wave design. The lacquer shows natural age cracks and small losses, with minor nicks, light scratches, and some tiny raden losses expected from stirrups of this period. Their distinct swan-like profile provided stability during mounted combat and differs notably from the stirrups used in other cultures.
