Hans Holbein the Younger - Bilder zum Alten Testament – Complete Set, Vols. I–IV; Deluxe Limited - 1920
A complete four-volume deluxe set of Bilder zum Alten Testament (Pictures from the Old Testament) after the celebrated woodcut series by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497–1543), issued in 1920 by Verlag für jüdische Kunst und Kultur Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin.
This edition forms Volumes 9–12 of the series Jüdische Bücherei, edited by Dr. Karl Schwarz, one of the most important Jewish art historians of the early 20th century and director of the Jewish Museum in Berlin.
The set reproduces Holbein’s iconic Old Testament woodcuts, originally printed in Lyon by Trechsel in 1538, here newly printed in superb clarity and restraint, respecting the Renaissance originals while presenting them in a refined modern Jewish scholarly context.
