In particular, their obsessive interest in depicting light characterizes the dreamlike atmosphere of their prints. Artists like Kawase Tomosui expressed a romantic yearning for nature, his rural roots, and the warmth of wooden architecture that was being lost in the Tokyo metropolis. Most of his prints were destroyed in a fire the year before his death. He was recognized as a Living National Treasure.
