In 1814, Hokusai s sketches were published in a handbook of over 4,000 images: Hokusai Manga.
According artist Hanshū Sanjin in his 1812 preface to Volume One, the pictures for the first book were made when Hokusai visited Gekkōtei Bokusen in the Western Provinces and was inspired to make 300 spontaneous drawings illustrating his personal theory of art.
