Walt Whitman - Leaves of grass - 1903

Leaves of grass by Walt Whitman. Including sands at seventy good-bye my fancy, old age echoes and a backward glance o'er travel'd roads. London: G. P. Putnam's sonds. Boston: Small, Maynard & Company - 1903. Bound in very fine green levant goat leather fine binding. Five raised bands to spine, gilt framed panels to spine, with title and author to upper panels. Date to lower spine. Double gilt framing to boards, and gilt lines to board edges, five double gilt lines to head- and tailcaps. Gilted block edges. Spine toned brown over time. Richly decorated doublures on inner boards, with bookbinding stamp to lower inner side of front board: J&E (John & Edward) Bumpus 350 - Oxford Street. Faint ink inscription to ffe dated 1924. Internals generally fine with few minor defects. Hand-sown head- and tailbands. Few rubbing marks to raised bands on spine. Pagination: 6+2+4+446+6pp. Leaves of Grass is a poetry collection by American poet Walt Whitman. After self-publishing it in 1855, he spent most of his professional life writing, revising, and expanding the collection until his death in 1892. Either six or nine separate editions of the book were produced, depending on how one defines a new edition. The continual modifications to Leaves of Grass resulted in vastly different copies of it circulating in Whitman's lifetime. The first edition was a slim tract of twelve poems, and the last was a compilation of over 400 poems.
