Exquisite Irabo Chawan (Tea Ceremony Bowl) by Mitsuaki Kato (Koyo-gama)
This is a high-quality "Irabo" style tea bowl, masterfully crafted by Mitsuaki Kato (加藤光昭) at his Koyo-gama (光燿窯) kiln in Seto, Aichi Prefecture—one of Japan’s most prestigious and historic ceramic centers.
The Artist and Provenance:
Mitsuaki Kato is a distinguished ceramic artist based in Seto (Izumi-machi 28). He is highly regarded for his deep understanding of traditional tea pottery, particularly his ability to recreate the rustic and spiritual essence of the "Irabo" style. This piece features the artist’s signature on the wooden box and his distinctive "Mitsu" (光) seal impressed near the foot (kodai) of the bowl.
Aesthetic Features:
The bowl embodies the "Wabi-sabi" aesthetic with its characteristic sandy texture and dynamic yellowish-brown "Irabo" glaze. The highlight of this piece is the "Keshiki" (scenery) on the front, where the glaze flows naturally, creating beautiful drips that contrast with the rich, exposed clay. The powerful carving of the foot (kodai) demonstrates the artist’s exceptional skill and confident touch.
