Jeanne Thil (1887-1968) - Wounded Soldier

Ink, charcoal and watercolour on buff paper by Jeanne Thil (French, 1887 - 1968) - "Wounded Soldier". Probably dating to a period during or immediately after the World War I. Jeanne Thil (1887–1968) was a French painter from Calais. She trained at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris and regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français for over five decades. Renowned for her Orientalist style, her work drew on impressions from her travels in Spain and Tunisia, featuring vivid, exotic scenes. Thil’s career gained momentum after she received a travel grant in 1921, which enabled her to visit North Africa and produce powerful depictions of its landscapes and people. As her reputation grew, she was commissioned to create large-scale murals in France and North Africa, including projects for venues like the Palais Tunisien and the Musée des Colonies. Contemporary critics praised her as not only one of the leading women painters of her time, but also among the foremost history and Orientalist artists. Mixed media (ink, charcoal and watercolour) on buff paper. Mounted, framed and glazed. Signed in black lower left corner with "J. Thil". It depicts a scene in a period hospital, with a wounded soldier with medal been tended by nurses and visited by fellow army officers and soldiers. The work is preserved in a very good state of conservation. The gilt wood frame and the glaze are in a good condition, ready to be hanged. The mount is damp stains on lower edge, but this does not affect at all the overall aesthetics. Dimensions of the work - without frame: 24.5 x 17.5 cm, dimensions of the work with frame: 41 x 36 cm.
