Original hand-coloured steel engraving map by Captain Radefeld, dated 1846, from Meyer's Large Hand Atlas, published by the Bibliographic Institute Hildburghausen, Amsterdam, Paris and Philadelphia. The map shows Australia, New Zealand, large parts of Indonesia and the South Seas. The main landmass is referred to as ‘New Holland’. The coastlines are shown in detail, while the interior of the Australian continent, especially the west and north, is largely unexplored and empty. The populated areas are concentrated on the south and east coasts and are labelled. There are three inset maps: Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), New South Wales and the south-western tip of Australia.
