The exterior is finished in a translucent amber-brown lacquer known as tame-nuri, where the underlying layers show through subtly to create a deep, refined gloss different from ordinary black lacquer. The lid and sides are decorated in gold maki-e with a samurai family crest of three stars and a sword within a circle. The three stars are sometimes called the “general’s stars” and were favoured by warrior families as an auspicious emblem of victory. Inside, the tray and cover are richly finished with a shimmering nashiji ground, in beautiful contrast to the calm, dark exterior. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface. The brass water dropper is a small but highly accomplished piece of metalwork. Its surface is covered with an exceptionally fine fish-roe pattern (nanako ground), over which cherry blossoms drifting on a flowing river (the classic “sakura over stream” motif) are modelled in relief, demonstrating the artisan’s precise chiselling skill. The inkstone retains traces of old ink from past use. There is overall wear consistent with age and use, including abrasions, small scratches and general surface soiling. The corners and edges show age-related cracks, chips and flaking to the lacquer. One corner and the adjoining side have a noticeable break with overpainting and repair, and other repaired areas can be seen around the edges. The inkstone has ink residues and a musty, mould-like smell. The water dropper shows age patina and discolouration, and the metal fittings exhibit areas of corrosion. Please refer to the photographs for a full impression of the condition. Dimensions: approx.
