A traditional Kulali, a coconut ocarina or whistle from the Abelam people
Wosera area, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea - Mid 20th century
Made from a carefully carved coconut shell. Hand-etched with intricate geometric, zigzag, and spiral designs. Used as a whistle or ocarina during traditional and ceremonial gatherings. Instruments like the Kulali ocarina are historically played to invoke ancestral spirits during sacred rituals.
