Also the Travels, Adventures, and Discoveries of Captain John H. Speke, Captain Richard F. Burton, Captain James W. Grant, Sir Samuel and Lady Baker, and other Distinguished Explorers.
This is a general survey of African exploration during the Victorian era, incorporating chapters on Stanley, Speke, Burton and many of the other most important explorers of the period. Much like the astronauts of the Apollo era, these explores in Africa were great heroes of their age and their toils and adventures thrilled readers around the world who were always eager to learn more.

Authentic first edition and complete large work of traveling explorations in Africa. Illustrated with full-page colour frontispiece, and 10 further chromolithographic plates. Published by Walter Scott, London, (c1870s). Publisher’s original red textured cloth with decorations in black and gilt on the upper cover and spine in all-over designs, the rare cover stamped in blind. All page edges gilt.
Book Dimensions: 27 x 21 x 4 cm and Number of Pages: 662 + 2 pages ads.
Weighing in excess of two kilograms.
Condition
External covers with some faded marks, and light wear to corners and edges, and minor rubbings and tears to head and foot of spine. Internally; in good condition. Old inscriptions with red and blue ink on both inside front cover page and on the first blank front free endpaper page. Also neat prize label dated 1891 on the back of first blank front free endpaper page. Inner hinges are very good. Pages are tightly held at the gutter and edged in gilt. Pages are clean with occasional light marks to the margin of few pages. The colour plates are particularly vivid and striking (Please see pictures).
