These two are British pound banknotes from the Australian Commonwealth era, legal tender before the Australian dollar was issued, and are important witnesses to the history of Australian currency. Above: 1 pound banknote (issued circa 1933-1938) Face value: ONE POUND (1 AUD) Issuer: Commonwealth of Australia Key Information: The portrait on the right is of King George V of the United Kingdom (at that time, Australia was still part of the Commonwealth, with the British monarch as head of state). Signature combinations: Governor is E.C. Riddle, Secretary to the Treasury is H.J. Sheehan, a classic signature from the 1930s. The text notes: "This Note is legal tender for ONE POUND in the Commonwealth and in all Territories under the control of the Commonwealth," indicating that it is legal tender throughout Australia and all Commonwealth territories.
