Wolfgang Ludwig: KS 25 – MoMA Responsive Eye (1968) An original silkscreen in a square format, hand-printed on paper. 28 × 28 cm. In excellent condition. Hand-signed. Wolfgang Ludwig (1923–2009) is considered one of the foremost German representatives of Op Art. In 1965 he was among the European artists included in The Responsive Eye, the Museum of Modern Art's landmark survey of optical art in New York, on view from 23 February to 25 April 1965 and curated by William C. Seitz. Bringing together some 125 works and introducing American audiences to figures such as Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, the exhibition became MoMA's most popular show to that date and launched the mid-1960s vogue for Op. The optical-kinetic motif of the present sheet belongs to this body of work. Ludwig was born in 1923 in Mielesdorf, Thuringia. He first studied from 1947 to 1950 at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig and then completed a second course of study from 1950 to 1956 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin under Hans Uhlmann and Alexander Camaro. In 1955 he received a scholarship from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. From 1956 to 1967 he worked as a freelance collaborator for the Berlin architect Paul G. R. Baumgarten. In 1967 he took up a post as lecturer at the Academy of Graphic Arts, Printing and Advertising, and from 1971 to 1991 he was professor of visual communication at the College of Fine Arts in Berlin. He died in Berlin in 2009.
