This is an intriguing piece of bed linen which, as far as I can determine, dates from the late 19th century. It is certainly a first for me, and it never ceases to surprise me how many different bed linen designs were created over the centuries. The design and pattern are particularly interesting, and I am almost tempted to regard it as a forerunner of the French Art Nouveau movement. The embroidered initials, J.M., certainly contribute to that impression. They are worked in high relief and form a striking focal point. Beneath the graduated border of large open-thread work are numerous medallions, seemingly sheltered or framed by the initials, creating a fascinating visual perspective. These are further surrounded by twelve smaller circular motifs. The bed linen is finished with a matching border of large open-thread work around the edge, completing what is both an unusual and highly decorative design.
