Farewell Photography is one of the most radical and iconic photobooks in the history of Japanese photography. Originally published in 1972 by Shashin Hyoronsha, this 2006 first-edition reprint by PowerShovel Books faithfully recreates Moriyama's most provocative work, widely regarded as a watershed moment in postwar visual art.
The book embodies Moriyama's celebrated "are, bure, boke" (grainy, blurred, out-of-focus) aesthetic pushed to its absolute limit — a deliberate rejection of conventional photographic beauty in favor of raw, visceral immediacy. Daido Moriyama nasceu em 10 de outubro de 1938, em Ikeda, Província de Osaka, Japão. Após trabalhar como designer gráfico, tornou-se assistente de fotógrafos Takeji Iwamiya e Eikoh Hosoe antes de se estabelecer de forma independente em 1964. Rapidamente ganhou destaque por meio de suas contribuições para a revista de fotografia vanguardista Provoke (1968–1970), onde seu estilo característico "are, bure, boke" — que se identifica por alto contraste, granulação pesada, desfoque de movimento e recorte radical — desafiou a definição de fotografia como forma de arte.
Seus photobooks de referência, incluindo Nippon Theatre (1968) e Farewell Photography (1972), redefiniram os limites do photobook como meio artístico e consagraram-no como uma das figuras mais importantes da fotografia do século XX.
