Originally planted in the ground, posts of this type were used to tether animals. As often with Dogon utilitarian objects, the form goes beyond pure function and takes on a strong sculptural presence. This example is especially appealing for its subtly anthropomorphic character. The upper part suggests a rounded head, with a triangular facial element and a ringed neck below. The long lower section, worn and eroded by age and use, gives the piece a slender and almost archaic silhouette. The surface shows a dry, deeply textured patina, with cracks, erosion, abrasions and traces of long exposure and handling. These marks are an essential part of the object’s character, giving it both visual strength and a sense of material history. The object is mounted on a custom metal stand, included with the lot, which presents the post vertically and emphasizes its sculptural quality.
