Title: Japanese Wood-Fired Triangular Flower Vase, Tomobako Box (桐共箱) Artist: Shūsa (周作) Kiln: Noborigama Wood-Fired Kiln (登窑柴烧) Dimensions: Approx. H 32 cm (12.60 in) × Max Diameter 9.8 cm (3.86 in) Weight: 1903 g Tomobako Box Dimensions: Approx. H 36 cm (14.17 in) × W 13.5 cm (5.31 in) × D 13.5 cm (5.31 in) Material: Iron-rich raw stoneware, bare wood firing with natural pine ash glaze streaks, no artificial glaze applied Period: Mid Showa era (1970–1980) This is a vertical flower vessel for Japanese tea rooms, a representative traditional wood-fired ceramic with distinctive wabi-sabi (侘寂) texture. Japanese wood-fired pottery boasts a thousand-year craft heritage. Its core feature is bare firing without artificial glazes. Unique one-of-a-kind kiln textures form solely from natural iron minerals in clay and pine ash generated during firing, making it a classic embodiment of Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetics. The mid-to-late Showa era brought a flourishing period for folk wood-fired pottery creation. Artisans followed ancient noborigama climbing kiln techniques, hand-forming pieces with local iron-rich stoneware. Rich layered natural firing streaks form purely from kiln temperature and falling pine ash, and its rugged, understated texture is widely favoured by tea ceremony practitioners. This flower vase features an asymmetrical triangular cylindrical shape with naturally tapering, organic lines. The lower body holds deep, dark firing tones that blend upward with pale off-white and amber streaky ash glaze — a unique texture naturally created by high-temperature falling ash during firing; no two vessels bear identical patterns. It has an uneven slanted top rim for vertical display. The coarse stoneware body shows distinct granular texture, paired with wild yet soft layered kiln marks that create a calm, aged vintage aura. It comes with a complete tomobako box bundled with fabric cord and yellow silk cushion cloth. The front lid bears brush calligraphy "Sankaku Hanairi (三角花入)", signed and sealed by artist Shūsa (周作). Minor light wear marks can be seen on the vessel surface due to its age. There are no cracks, chips or restorations. Overall condition is good.
