During the Republic of China period (1918-1928), Sichuan was in turmoil, with warlords controlling various regions. Various warlords began to direct the mints in Chongqing and Chengdu to produce Malan coins (commemorative coins, also known as substitute coins). Malan commemorative coins were thus introduced and circulated, but were limited to use among warlords for commemoration, rewards, and gifts, clearly serving as substitute coins. The design of Malan commemorative coins features a "galloping horse" and "orchid" as the overall pattern (some also feature a galloping horse with plum blossoms, chrysanthemums, and ears of grain). Most lack year, denomination, and place of issue, with over a hundred varieties. Malan commemorative coins were made of red copper, brass, white copper, and silver.
