The "New York bike map ouch" refers to the unique street art by Denis OUCH, who hand-pulls silkscreens and spray paints portraits and icons directly onto authentic, vintage New York City bicycle maps. One-of-a-kind pieces: Each artwork uses archived, out-of-circulation NYC bike map paper as a textured, historical base. Mixed media style: Combines silkscreen chaos, spray paint, acrylics, and official transit markings. Denis OUCH is a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist whose practice moves between street art, pop, and abstraction. Working with stencils, silkscreen, spray paint, acrylic, collage, canvas, public walls, and reclaimed New York City maps, he transforms familiar words and cultural icons into bold visual statements about power, desire, consumerism, violence, freedom, belief, and empathy. His images are immediate, colorful, and often humorous, but the questions beneath them are rarely comfortable. PETERSBURG TO NEW YORK OUCH's artistic roots reach back to 1990s St. Petersburg, during Russia's turbulent transition from the Soviet system to an emerging market economy. The sudden arrival of Western advertising, consumer imagery, and new forms of social and political expression created a visual collision that would shape his work. As an early participant in St. Petersburg's developing street-art scene, OUCH began placing emotionally charged words and phrases in public spaces. These early interventions established his continuing interest in language as both image and provocation—and in the street as a place where art could communicate directly with people outside the traditional gallery environment. In 2001, OUCH moved to New York while pursuing studies in economics. Immersed in the city's street culture, monumental scale, visual density, and relentless energy, he ultimately committed himself to art as a full-time practice. Beginning with tags and large-scale murals, his work expanded during the early 2010s into clothing, limited editions, works on paper, and canvas. Reclaimed New York City maps became one of his signature materials. Their existing networks of streets, routes, neighborhoods, folds, and marks provide an urban ground upon which he recontextualizes celebrities, political figures, commercial symbols, animals, and art-historical subjects.
