Colonel E.H. Taylor Straight Kentucky Rye - Bottled in Bond - 100 Proof - 750ml

E. H. Taylor, Jr. is one of the flagship whiskey brands from the renowned Buffalo Trace Distillery. While the range is best known for its exceptional bourbons, this expression stands out as the only rye whiskey in the collection. On the nose, it delivers a rich bouquet of classic rye characteristics, including dried fruit, cracked black pepper, and warm baking spices. What truly sets it apart, however, is a pronounced note of toasted oak—a feature rarely found with such intensity in rye whiskeys, which are typically released at a younger age. The palate opens with a bold burst of spice before revealing remarkable depth and balance. Layers of creamy vanilla, ripe berries, caramel, black pepper, and freshly grated nutmeg unfold beautifully, creating a complex and rewarding tasting experience. The whiskey coats the palate with an impressive richness, making it difficult to stop after just one dram. The finish is long and satisfying, staying true to its rye roots with lingering notes of cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg, while the toasted oak continues to leave its elegant signature. The whiskey is named after Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr., one of the most influential figures in American whiskey history. Despite the title, Taylor was not a military officer. The honorific "Kentucky Colonel" is the Commonwealth of Kentucky's highest civilian distinction, awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the state. Another famous recipient is Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Among Taylor's greatest achievements was his pivotal role in the passage of the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, legislation that established important quality standards for American whiskey and remains highly respected today. He also built the iconic Old Taylor Distillery, designed to resemble a medieval castle—a fittingly bold legacy for one of bourbon's true pioneers.
