A pair of Campari Bitter bottles in fair condition.
Campari Bitter (or simply Campari) is an iconic Italian aperitif liqueur, invented by Gaspare Campari in 1860 and produced by Davide Campari-Milano. It is renowned worldwide for its unmistakable bright red color and its distinctively bitter, citrusy flavor profile.
It boasts a complex, layered profile combining intense notes of bitter orange, aromatic herbs, floral hints, rhubarb, and wood, finishing with a velvety aftertaste.
It has an alcohol content of 25% on the Italian market—roughly twice the strength of Aperol.
The exact formula has remained a secret for over 160 years. The only ingredients listed on the label are water, sugar, alcohol, natural flavorings, and colorings. Historically, the red color was derived from a natural dye made from cochineal insects, though this has since been replaced by artificial colorings in most markets.
Campari Bitter is an irreplaceable ingredient and a cornerstone of the most famous Italian aperitif cocktails.
