Original etching from the celebrated portfolio “Les Fables”

A beautiful and highly collectible original etching by Marc Chagall, created in 1927 as part of his celebrated series of illustrations for Jean de La Fontaine’s “Les Fables”.

This work, entitled “La jeune veuve” (“The Young Widow”), is sheet no. 72 from the complete series. It displays Chagall’s unmistakable poetic visual language, combining expressive line work, delicate tonal contrasts and a subtle sense of narrative.

The etching is signed by the artist in pencil “Marc Chagall” at the lower right and numbered “72” at the lower left. It was printed on fine handmade paper with the “Montgolfier” watermark.

The complete “Les Fables” project was commissioned by the important Parisian art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard. The edition comprised 100 etchings, each issued with generous margins, signed by Marc Chagall and marked with its respective sequence number.
