John Kitto - The Pictorial Sunday-Book - Illustrated Bible, coloured maps & engravings - 1845
Description
John Kitto, D.D. – The Pictorial Sunday-Book
London, Charles Knight and Co., Ludgate Street, 1845.
An impressive and richly illustrated Victorian work by John Kitto (1804–1854), biblical scholar and editor of the celebrated Pictorial Bible.
A particularly attractive large-format publication, remarkable for its extensive pictorial content. The work is illustrated throughout with a great number of engravings depicting biblical history, landscapes, architecture, antiquities, works of art and scenes after celebrated Old Masters.
Especially noteworthy are the beautiful coloured “Patent Illuminated Maps”, including detailed maps of Modern Palestine and Armenia, Mesopotamia, Syria and the adjacent countries.
The volume furthermore contains numerous large and full-page engravings after celebrated artists, including Raphael and Rubens, as well as attractive architectural and coloured illustrations, including a striking representation of a historic stained-glass window.
The illustrations form an important part of the publication and provide a fascinating combination of biblical history, 19th-century geography, archaeology, art and cartography.
Bound in an attractive period binding of dark cloth with leather corners and spine. The front board bears a particularly decorative large gilt religious emblem, showing a radiant Cross above a Bible and chalice.
A visually impressive example of Victorian illustrated publishing, particularly interesting for collectors of 19th-century illustrated books, biblical cartography, historical maps and religious iconography.
Condition:
The binding shows signs of age and use, particularly to the corners and extremities, as visible in the photographs. The gilt decoration on the front board remains attractive. Interior generally well preserved for its age, with occasional foxing and age-related spotting. Maps and illustrations retain good detail and colour.
Please study the photographs carefully; they form an integral part of the description.

Special features: Coloured maps, numerous engravings and full-page illustrations .
