§ Two works in one volume, 16mo (143 x 92); [10], ccciiii; cxxxi, [1] leaves. Two beautiful title pages printed in red and black, three woodcut printer’s device. Text on two columns, gothic types. Fascinating contemporary brown calf binding on wooden boards, metal clasps preserve and still working, a very fine copy on crisp paper.
Second edition at all, (1st, Rome, Marcellus Silber,1525) and first one printed outside Italy, the birthcountry of the author, extremamente rara, only 4 copies recorded in libraries, none in U:S: As an hand-pocket manual for confessors the Summula was one of the most renowned legal- theological works of the age; after the Editio Princeps of 1525 it gained strong success, with several reprints until 1559, when it was inserted in the Index librorum prohibitorum. Entered the Dominican Order at a very young age, Tommaso da Vio, after studying theology in Naples, moved to Padua, where he obtained his doctorate, before devoting himself to teaching at the universities of Padua and Brescia. He became Master General of the Order in 1508 and was elevated to the rank of cardinal in 1517. A politician as skilful as he was learned, a fierce opponent of Lutheran doctrines during the Imperial Diet of Augsburg in 1518, he was one of the leading figures of his era.
