"Ancient Roman Bronze Archer's Ring Culture / Period: Ancient Roman Date / Period: 1st–2nd century A.D. Material: Bronze Dimensions: Outer diameter: 23 mm Condition: Good condition. No shipping outside the European Union. Due to complex export regulations concerning cultural goods, this item cannot be shipped outside the EU. Please ensure you have a delivery address within the European Union before placing a bid. Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 779 The current owner purchased this object from a reputable Dutch numismatic auction house in Schiedam, the Netherlands. Due to privacy regulations, the name of the previous owner could not be disclosed. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This bronze ring is attributed as an archer's thumb ring, dating to the Roman Imperial period. Its asymmetrical profile, with one side thickened into a smooth, rounded projection, is consistent with a form designed to protect the thumb during the release of a bowstring. While most surviving thumb rings are known from the eastern regions of the ancient world, examples and related forms are also associated with Roman auxiliary archers serving throughout the Empire. As with many simple bronze examples, the precise function cannot be established with absolute certainty, but its form is compatible with an archery-related thumb guard. Thumb rings were worn on the drawing thumb by archers using the thumb-release technique. The enlarged section protected the thumb from the considerable force of the bowstring while allowing for a clean and controlled release. This method was particularly effective with powerful composite bows, which were widely employed by mounted archers and specialist auxiliary units in Roman service. The Roman army recruited skilled archers from provinces renowned for their expertise, including Syria, Thrace, Anatolia, and the eastern frontier. These units played an important role in military campaigns, frontier defence, and garrison duties across the Empire. Their equipment reflects the exchange of military traditions between Rome and neighbouring cultures, where thumb-release archery had long been established. The ring was cast in bronze and carefully finished to produce a durable object capable of withstanding repeated use. Bronze was well suited to practical military equipment, combining strength with resistance to wear. Similar objects accompanied soldiers on campaign and could remain in service for many years. Dating to the 1st–2nd century A.D., this piece belongs to the height of the Roman Imperial period, when auxiliary archers formed an essential component of the Roman military machine. If correctly identified, it represents a specialised item of military equipment rather than ordinary personal jewellery."
