【Product details】
Dating from the early Showa period, this set of eight traditional lacquer furnishings was made for display with Japanese Hina dolls during Hinamatsuri, the Japanese Doll Festival. Finished in vermilion and black lacquer, the pieces are richly decorated in gold maki-e with auspicious motifs including cranes, peacocks, peonies, pine, bamboo, plum blossom and butterflies.
The set comprises two dining sets with lacquer tableware, two four-tier stacking boxes with stands (jubako), one chest of drawers (tansu), and three storage chests (tsuzura). The stacking boxes feature finely detailed scenes of peacocks, cranes, peonies and bamboo, while the vermilion chest of drawers is decorated with pine, bamboo, plum blossom and butterflies. The three storage chests include one larger chest with pine and cranes and two smaller boxes tied with vermilion cords and tassels.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese lacquer technique in which gold or silver powder is applied to wet lacquer to create intricate decoration. Two period wooden storage boxes inscribed “Bijutsu O-Hina Dōgu” (美術 御雛道具), meaning “Artistic Hina Doll Furnishings,” are included.
Fair to good vintage condition with age-related wear. The colours and brilliance of the maki-e remain relatively well preserved, but there is dirt, lacquer loss, small chips, cracking and some lifting, particularly around the edges of the trays, corners of the stacking boxes and rims of the tableware. The metal fittings show oxidation and age-related deterioration, and some cords and tassels are disarranged. The fittings and cord of the larger storage chest have damaged areas. The two wooden storage boxes show considerable staining, soiling, discolouration and dust from age. Please refer carefully to the photographs for the condition and completeness of all pieces.
