Émile Gallé – Dragonfly, Water Lily and Arrowhead Vase
About Émile Gallé
Émile Gallé (1846–1904) was one of the most important artists of French Art Nouveau and a leading figure of the École de Nancy.
Deeply fascinated by botany and the natural sciences, Gallé transformed flowers, plants, insects and landscapes into poetic compositions in glass. For him, nature was more than decoration: it was a source of artistic expression, filled with movement, fragility and life.
His innovative use of layered glass, acid etching and subtle colour gradations earned him international recognition, particularly at the Paris Expositions of 1889 and 1900. Today, his works remain among the most admired and collected examples of Art Nouveau glass.
About the Work
This beautiful vase depicts a tranquil aquatic landscape with dragonflies, water lilies and arrowhead plants.
The decoration is created through layers of coloured glass and acid-etched relief, producing a remarkable sense of depth. Shades of milky white, turquoise and green gradually transition into a luminous yellow-green along the exceptionally slender neck.
A large dragonfly hovers above the aquatic plants on the rounded body, while another insect appears higher on the neck. This vertical composition encourages the eye to travel upward, making the entire vase feel almost like a living landscape.
Dragonflies and other insects were particularly suited to the flowing aesthetic of Art Nouveau and also reflect the period's fascination with nature and Japanese art. In this work, the dragonfly is not simply decorative; together with the water plants, it creates the impression of a quiet moment beside a pond.
The contrast between the rounded body and the long, elegant neck gives the vase a particularly graceful silhouette. At approximately 29 cm high, it also has an impressive presence when displayed.
Depending on the light, the translucent layers of glass reveal different shades and details, giving the scene an atmospheric, almost dreamlike quality.
Rather than simply depicting nature, the vase seems to capture a small landscape within the glass—a characteristic expression of Gallé's poetic approach to Art Nouveau.
The side bears the Gallé signature.
A highly decorative and atmospheric piece for collectors of Émile Gallé, French Art Nouveau glass and European decorative arts.
