Ícone - Cristo Pantocrator - Madeira

Ícone russo da Igreja Ortodoxa depicting Christ Pantocrator, painted on a wooden panel and fitted with an embossed and chased gilt-metal oklad. Christ is shown frontally with a radiating halo, his right hand raised in blessing and his left supporting the Gospels. The ornate repoussé covering incorporates scrolling foliate and geometric decoration, leaving the painted face and portions of the hands exposed. The painting displays pronounced age-related craquelure, while the metal covering retains traces of gilding with oxidation, rubbing, losses and general wear consistent with age and devotional use. The reverse comprises joined wooden boards reinforced by a horizontal batten, with later hanging hardware. Late 19th/early 20th century.
