18th Century Folding - Chave

This lot features a large iron folding key created most likely in the late 18th century or early 19th century, probably France. Called also a pocket key or clef piante, the piece was hand-forged from wrought iron. When unfolded, it functions as a regular security key, providing enough length to pass completely through a thick wooden gate or cellar door into an internal rim lock. When folded, the complex cut bit tucks completely away into the loop, allowing the person carrying it to slip a heavy iron tool into their pocket safely without tearing their clothes. These specialized keys were typically commissioned by wealthy individuals, merchant guilds, or guards who needed to carry large security keys (such as for church doors, city gates, or town vaults) on their person daily. The swivel hinge mechanism introduced a major point of structural failure. Because the bits frequently snapped off or grew loose over centuries of heavy rotation, few have survived intact. Mechanism of this piece is still in good working order, the small pin responsible for its middle pivot, was gracefully joined into metal, visible only after a careful inspection. Considerable large size of this piece, its very good condition, the pleasant dark brownish patina and with the fact that its mechanism is still functional, highly increase its scarcity. Small scratches on the metal surface are present on a few edges and a very superficial rust layer, wich can easily be removed if preferred. No stamps or maker marks are visible, enforcing the version of a late 18th century - early 19th century old manufacture.
