Dan Bassa Dance Axe - Danané Region, Côte d’Ivoire, incl stand.
This extraordinary dance axe combines the martial presence of an iron blade with the refined imagery of West African woodcarving. Its elongated, dark-patinated shaft is crowned by a meticulously sculpted human head. The narrow face, with half-closed eyes, a prominent nose, and a slightly open mouth, features a tall hairstyle defined by incised lines. Woven ornaments encircle the neck and handle, the lower section of which is adorned with decorative metal nails. A broad, trapezoidal iron blade protrudes from the side, its rust-brown surface creating a striking contrast to the smooth wood. The interplay of human form, ornament, and weapon lends the object the character of a ceremonial symbol of dignity.
The Dan people live in western Côte d’Ivoire, particularly in the Danané region, as well as in neighboring Liberia. The neighboring Bassa people also belong to the cultural sphere of this border region. Richly decorated axes there could serve not only as practical symbols but also as signs of rank and prestige; comparable Dan prestige axes with figuratively carved handles are documented.
The designation as a warrior dance axe suggests a possible use in public or ceremonial appearances. However, a specific ritual function cannot be determined from the form alone.
