Caixa (5) - Madeira - Conjunto de Orquídea Maki-e Dourado

Item Description A set of 5 Japanese lacquerware pieces decorated with gold maki-e. This lot brings together lacquerware from Wajima-nuri and Zōhiko. The centrepiece is a black lacquer document box featuring orchids rendered in gold, silver, and red, bearing the signature "Keigetsu" and a red seal. Also included are a black rectangular tray decorated with a gold family crest-style motif, a lidded tea caddy, and one each of a red and a black round lidded container. Each round lidded container holds a set of small dishes decorated with seasonal flowers. As maker's marks or workshop signatures cannot be confirmed on every piece, no definitive attribution is made for individual items. The 5 pieces are as follows: 1. Black lacquer rectangular lidded document box. Orchid design in gold, silver, and red, with the signature "Keigetsu" and a red seal. 2. Black lacquer rectangular tray decorated with a gold family crest-style motif. 3. Black lacquer cylindrical lidded tea caddy. Gold floral design, red lacquer interior, with metal rim. 4. Red lacquer round lidded container with gold sakura design. Includes a set of red small dishes decorated with cherry blossoms. 5. Black lacquer round lidded container with gold weeping cherry blossom design. Includes black small dishes decorated with plum blossoms and bamboo. Dimensions listed are for the largest single piece. Weight is the combined total for all 5 pieces. Please refer to the photographs for full details. Maker Profile Zōhiko is a long-established Kyoto lacquerware house founded in 1661 under the name "Zōgeya." The shop name derives from Hikobei, a craftsman renowned for his maki-e work — the technique of decorating lacquerware with gold and silver. The third-generation Nishimura Hikobei was granted the title of "Maki-e no Tsukasa." A maki-e work he created depicting "Fugen Bosatsu Riding a White Elephant" was highly acclaimed in Kyoto, and his works came to be known as "Zōhiko" — combining the "Zō" of Zōgeya (ivory house) with the "Hiko" of Hikobei. Later generations served as purveyors to the Imperial Household Agency, producing numerous works for the imperial court and tea ceremony families. For over 350 years, Zōhiko has continued to inherit and refine the beauty of Kyoto lacquerware, centred on the harmony of urushi lacquering and maki-e. Wajima-nuri, by contrast, is a traditional craft from a separate region, designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1977. It is characterised by a robust foundation built on a keyaki wood base coated with lacquer mixed with diatomaceous earth powder (ji-no-ko), completed through approximately 124 stages of production. Dimensions (largest piece) Height: 4.2 cm Width: 15 cm Depth: 21 cm Total Weight 963 g Condition Pre-owned, with scratches, scuffs, minor chips, and light soiling. The tea caddy and black round lidded container show more noticeable wear to the lacquer and gilt areas. The document box appears to be in relatively good condition. Items are sold as-is; please examine all photographs carefully. Additional Information Contents: 5 pieces (document box, tray, tea caddy, red lidded container with small dishes, black lidded container with small dishes). Country of origin: Japan.
