Antique Persian Qajar Glazed Pottery Tile with Mounted Polo Player (Chogan) – 20th Century – 20.5 cm
Description
A striking 20th-century Persian Qajar glazed pottery tile, decorated with a lively figural scene depicting a mounted polo player engaged in the traditional Persian game of Chogan.
The central composition shows a horseman dressed in vivid cobalt blue, riding at speed while raising a long curved polo stick above his head. A polo ball is visible below, clearly identifying the subject as a Chogan scene. Stylised flowering plants and vegetation surround the rider, while a turquoise-blue border frames the composition.
The hand-painted decoration is executed in a distinctive palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, green, yellow, brown and black over a warm cream-coloured ground. Strong black outlines and the expressive treatment of the rider and horse give the tile a bold and highly decorative character.
The glazed surface displays extensive natural craquelure, contributing to the distinctive aged appearance of the tile. The reverse remains unglazed, revealing the original ceramic body and old surface traces.
A particularly attractive example of Persian Qajar figural tilework, combining equestrian imagery with the historic Persian tradition of Chogan.
