“Tarde de piscina” is a painting by contemporary artist Ernest García that recreates a summer scene, rest and luminosity in a Mediterranean-inspired setting. The work stands out for its intense chromatic palette, expressive brushwork, and a composition that combines contemporary figuration with influences of fauvism and modern painting of the 20th century.

The scene features two women enjoying a sunny afternoon beside a pool. One of them rests on a sun lounger covered by a red towel, while the other remains seated at the edge, with legs immersed in the water. Both wear red swimsuits and sunglasses, elements that reinforce the summery and carefree character of the composition.

The water is one of the most interesting pictorial elements of the work. The surface of the pool occupies much of the foreground and is built with loose brushstrokes of turquoise blue, aqua green, white, and small yellow and reddish reflections. These strokes, seemingly spontaneous, suggest the movement of the water and the effects of sunlight on its surface.
The composition is organized around a contrast between warm and cool tones. The intense reds of the towels and swimsuits face the blues of the sky and the pool, while the deep greens of the vegetation provide balance and depth.

The painting shows a clear affinity with fauvism, especially in the use of saturated colors, chromatic contrasts and freedom of brushwork. Its treatment of light and leisure scenes recalls Henri Matisse’s investigations into Mediterranean life, color and the representation of resting spaces.

Connections with modern figurative painting can also be appreciated, where everyday scenes gain artistic interest through composition, simplification of forms and the expressiveness of the pictorial matter.

Ernest García uses a direct and visible brushstroke, alternating relatively uniform color surfaces with areas of greater movement. The human figures are represented by synthesized forms, not relying on overly detailed drawing, allowing color and atmosphere to become the true protagonists.
The perspective of the pool guides the gaze toward the figures and the vegetation in the background, while the palm trees frame the scene and reinforce its intimate and tropical character.

“Tarde de piscina” conveys a sense of calm, warmth and freedom. The intense light, the crystal-clear water and the relaxed attitude of the protagonists evoke those summer moments when time seems to stand still.
A painting that combines the tradition of the Mediterranean landscape with a contemporary interpretation of the human figure, especially appealing to collectors of figurative art, Fauvist painting, summer scenes, pool landscapes and works characterized by expressive use of color.
