T E Lawrence (1888-1935) - Seven Pillars Of Wisdom - 1935

Seven Pillars Of Wisdom was a triumph by T E Lawrence when first published by Jonathan Cape, London, in August 1935 This was the third Impression of first edition published for general circulation in July 1935; privately published in 1926. The first trade edition (O'Brien's so-called 'third English edition') of Lawrence of Arabia's magisterial account of the Arab Revolt during the First World War. Eric Kennington, (1888-1960), artist, responsible for thirty portraits included in this trade edition. In his introduction, Lawrence is effusively thankful for Kennington's efforts as art-editor: 'If anybody likes any of these illustrations, he owes thanks to Kennington, who apart from his creative work, took over the duty of art-editor and for five years oversaw each proof of every block'. Here we have the autobiographical account of the experiences of British army colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence while serving as a military advisor to Bedouin forces during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire of 1916 to 1918. The book comprises an Introduction and an Epilogue. There are also four fold-out maps in red and black, 51 full-page b/w illustrations, and 4 in-text b/w illustrations. Light brown cloth boards with gilt lettering set within a gilt illustration of two swords on the front board. Marks to the boards with wear at the corners. Gilt lettering on the spine with bumping to top and bottom. Rough cut page edges. Foxing/marks to the endpapers. All pages are firm and the book is in very good internal condition. 672 pages. 26 x 20 cm.
