A rare Suma’goto 須磨琴 (single-string zither), also known as Ichigen’kin 一絃琴. A distinctive Japanese string instrument featuring a single silk string stretched across a solid kiri 桐 (paulownia) wood body. Unlike the traditional koto 琴, the Suma’goto lacks a resonating chamber, being carved from a single thick board. The pitch is changed using a sliding technique similar to that of a steel guitar, where a smooth implement is pressed against the string to vary its length and tone. The instrument begins at a broad, square end known as the “dragon’s head,” tapering gradually toward a rounded “dragon’s tail,” with two shallow semi-oval recesses on each side; a form said to evoke the shape of a dragon. It is fitted with ten decorative shizuku 雫 (“dewdrops”), of which two are missing. Finely crafted from kiri wood and set upon a matching rectangular base raised on four curved feet. Complete with a white polymer finger pick and slide used for playing.
