Păpușile tradiționale japoneze Daruma și Kokeshi – Motiv festiv și stilul clasic Tōgatta și Yajirō - Lemn - Japonia - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

Item Description This lot consists of three Japanese wooden folk art pieces: one Daruma doll and two traditional kokeshi dolls, presented together as a set. Each piece reflects a different aspect of Japanese folk craftsmanship and regional style. The Daruma doll features a powerful, expressive face painted in bold black brushstrokes. On the front of the body, the character “寿” (kotobuki), meaning “longevity” or “celebration,” is prominently painted, indicating that this piece was intended for a celebratory or auspicious occasion. The base bears an artist’s mark; however, due to its highly cursive and expressive calligraphy, the signature is not clearly legible. The surface shows natural wear and patina consistent with age and use, enhancing its folk-art character. The larger traditional kokeshi was created by Takashi Sakuta from Miyagi Prefecture, associated with the Tōgatta school. It features a slender body with bold red calligraphic-style motifs running vertically down the torso, complemented by simple facial features and a calm expression typical of the Tōgatta tradition. The base is signed by the artist. The smaller traditional kokeshi was created by Hajime Takahashi, a well-known kokeshi artist from Miyagi Prefecture, widely recognized for his creative kokeshi works. During a certain period, he also produced dolls inspired by the Yajirō style, as seen in this example. The piece is characterized by fine striped decoration around the neck and lower body, along with softly painted floral motifs. The base bears the artist’s signature. All three items are made of turned wood and hand-painted. Minor scratches, small stains, and signs of age are present, but there are no cracks or structural damages. Overall, the set is in good condition and offers an appealing overview of different expressions within Japanese folk doll traditions.
