Woman Burning Incense 香を焚く女 - 1976 - Limited Edition 156/470 & Hand-Signed - Takasawa Keiichi 高沢圭一 (1914-1984) - Japonia

We cannot ship to the USA due to suspension of the postal services from Malta. (Please read below). On auction is arguably the most famous and most sought after print of the master Keiichi Takasawa. Mr. Takasawa was well know as painter of paintings of beautiful women, often with an erotic edge to it. Throughout his life, he also made lithographs (mainly) and woodcut prints (occasionally). Of these prints, this print Woman Burning Incense is the most popular and as such rarely come on to the market. Unused examples are very rare. There may be two or three worldwide in galleries. As a collector, I count myself fortunate to have been able to acquire this print two times. One copy is framed and hanging in my house. The second print I kept in a drawer and I took it out from time to time to admire its beauty and details without glass between myself and the print. However, it is a shame for such a stunning print to be hidden away most of the time, so I have decided to offer this to someone who really appreciates the art of Mr. Takasawa. I have set a reserve price which is fair and considerably lower than the price set for similar Takasawa prints in galleries. Takasawa Keiichi was born in Gunma prefecture in 1914. In 1936 he dropped out of Nihon University school of technology, and subsequently he studied with Fujita Tsugeharu, who strongly influenced him. In 1937 he joined the Army News Department in Shanghai. In 1939 he won the Asahi award for one of his paintings. After the war he started making illustrations for women's magazines, and he was the author of A pictorial story of the kimono (1947), and of Women of Japan (1955). He also made woodblock prints, often based on his paintings. In 1974 an 1975 he had two major exhibitions in Paris. In 1977 an important publication on his paintings, Takasawa Keiichi ga shu appeared. Due to the introduction of the import tariff system in 2025, Maltapost has suspended all postal services to the USA until further notice. If you live in the USA, you will need to give an alternative address outside of the USA for shipments. Otherwise, please refrain from bidding.
