Ernst Gustaf Markström AR(1825-1897) - 1864, Uppsala - Frişcă - .830 argint - Cream Jug 140g
This is a fine mid-19th-century Swedish silver cream jug (gräddkanna) crafted by the respected Uppsala silversmith Ernst Gustaf Markström (1825–1897) in 1864.
Background on the Maker
Markström trained under masters in Sala and Enköping, became a journeyman in 1845, and earned his master status in Uppsala in 1849 (with a silver coffee pot as his masterpiece). He operated his own workshop in Uppsala until 1883, when he passed it to his son Knut Gustaf. His works are known for solid craftsmanship and often draw from historical styles popular in the mid-Victorian era.
Design and Style
The jug features a classic Rococo Revival (or neo-Rococo) design, characterized by its elegant, flowing lines. It includes:
A round, bulbous (bukig) body
Scrolled handle with applied leaf decoration
Four cast leaf feet (bladfötter) providing stable elevation
Gilded interior (invändig förgyllning) — a luxurious touch common in high-quality Swedish silver to prevent milk or cream from tarnishing the metal and to enhance visual warmth
The form is graceful and asymmetrical in the Rococo tradition, with organic, naturalistic motifs in the handle and feet.
Specifications
Height: 14.5 cm
Weight: 141 g
Hallmarks and Authenticity
It bears standard Swedish control marks for the period (three crowns in a trefoil for national guarantee, Uppsala town mark (Letter U), year letter for 1864 (K5), and Markström’s maker’s mark, CGM).
Condition and Appeal
The jug is in good antique condition with typical light surface scratches from use, a warm patina, and the gilding largely intact (showing some wear inside, as expected). No major dents or repairs are visible.
Collectability and Value
Pieces by provincial masters like Markström are sought after by collectors of Swedish 19th-century silver, particularly for their restrained yet decorative neo-Rococo forms. Comparable Markström cream jugs from the 1860s have sold at auction in recent years for the equivalent of several hundred to low thousands of USD/EUR, depending on condition and exact decoration. The interior gilding and well-defined leaf motifs add to its desirability.
This is a charming and functional example of mid-19th-century Swedish domestic silver—elegant enough for display yet practical for use at the tea or coffee table.
