A poetic pastoral study by Anton Mauve (1838–1888), a leading figure of the Hague School and an artist whose quiet naturalism profoundly shaped the early development of his cousin by marriage, Vincent van Gogh.
Executed in oil on panel, the present work captures a tender rural moment: a peasant woman gently engaging with a goat within a softly wooded landscape. Such intimate depictions of agrarian life lie at the heart of Mauve’s oeuvre, reflecting his lifelong commitment to realism and his sensitivity to the rhythms of the Dutch countryside. His restrained palette of silvery greens and earth tones, combined with fluid, atmospheric brushwork, exemplifies the tonal harmony associated with the Hague School—often referred to as the “Grey School.”
Born in Zaandam and trained in Haarlem under the animal painter Pieter Frederik van Os and later Wouter Verschuur, Mauve developed an exceptional facility in rendering livestock. From an early stage, he embraced painting en plein air, working alongside contemporaries such as Paul Gabriel and spending formative years in the artists’ colony of Oosterbeek before settling in The Hague in 1871. There, he played a pivotal role in guiding the young Van Gogh, offering both artistic instruction and personal support—an influence later acknowledged in Van Gogh’s tribute painting Souvenir de Mauve (1888).
In the 1880s, Mauve increasingly worked in the village of Laren, where his reputation flourished; his paintings became highly sought after by collectors across Europe and the United States. Today, his works are held in major international collections, including the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Kröller-Müller Museum, Mauritshuis, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Musée d’Orsay, among others.
This panel, with its immediacy and painterly freedom, offers a compelling glimpse into Mauve’s working process and his deeply felt vision of rural life. Acquiring such a work not only secures a fine example of Dutch Realism, but also establishes a direct link to the artistic lineage that helped shape one of the most influential painters of modern art.
